About us
Understanding the coastal ocean, before it turns against those who live by it
We are a research group working on environmental monitoring, extreme events, aquaculture and natural disasters in coastal waters.
A storm surge, a harmful bloom, a heatwave that arrives in the water before it arrives on land: these are the events that decide whether a harvest survives, whether a coastline floods, whether a warning goes out in time. Anticipating them is the work.
That anticipation runs on numerical models, and models run on observations. Every forecast of how a bay will behave tomorrow is only as sound as what was actually measured in it today. Sustained, well-placed measurements are the scarcest ingredient in the whole chain.
The buoys exist for that reason. They are instruments, not the point: a way to keep the sea under continuous observation and to feed the models that turn those observations into something a community can act on.
